If we seriously want to achieve carbon reduction in our existing housing stock then we have to mainstream low carbon upgrade of existing homes. This means training the local builder. CESW are embarking on a region-wide training initiative with LABC to do this. The training will include low carbon techniques plus health and safety. We want to achieve a once a year 1-day update programme for the local builder delivered in partnership with LABC. See Martin Chandler story in the June/July 2010 issue of the CESW FF newsletter.

The Met Office - The SWCCIP Construction Adaptation Case Study on: The Met Office (pdf).

Developments adapting to climate change - case studies (January 2009) - SWCCIP have developed the following case studies of new developments in the South West that have incorporated climate change adaptation measures into their design. The case studies highlight key adaptation measures, the benefits of adapting, and how any barriers to implementation were overcome:-

  • Cricklepit Mill (pdf 134kb) - A conversion of a historic mill building in Exeter into offices by the Devon Wildlife Trust.
  • The Scarlet(pdf 265kb) - A new hotel which is being developed on the north coast of Cornwall as a sister hotel to Bedruthan Steps.
  • Wessex Water Operations Centre (pdf 89kb) - Wessex Water's new operations centre in Bath was completed in 2000.
  • Okehampton Business Centre (pdf 318kb) - A business centre providing office space in the West Devon town of Okehampton.
  • Mountain Wood (pdf 87kb) - Three homes built by the Somer Housing Trust in Bathford, Bath.
If you have been involved with a construction or retrofit project that has incorporated climate change adaptation measures and would be happy for it to feature as a best practice Adaptation Case Study, please contact Becca Eastman, SWCCIP Project Officer, on 01392 352230 or email becca.eastman@environment-agency.gov.uk .

Adapting to Climate Change: a case study companion to the checklist for development (2005) - An accompanying booklet to the above report which contains case studies demonstrating techniques or design features that improve resilience to the impacts of climate change: www.london.gov.uk/lccp/publications/docs/adapting-climate-change-case-study-ver2.pdf.

The Code for Sustainable Homes: Case Studies (2009). The Code for Sustainable Homes includes some climate change adaptation issues, such as water efficency and surface water run-off, which are reflected in these accompanying case studies. 2 of the 4 case studies are in the South West - the Old Apple Store site in Somerset and the Co2 Zero development in Bristol. The implementation of sustainable procurement provides substantial opportunities to the construction industry and the wider community. Indeed, sustainable procurement can improve environmental performance and economic efficiency while addressing the social call for sustainable development. To take up these opportunities there is a clear requirement to motivate change towards sustainable attitudes and practices within the industry. For this reason, we are now putting together a series of case studies aiming to promote best practice in sustainable procurement and construction. The case studies include, but are not restricted to, projects which:
  • Conserve and enhance natural environment and biodiversity
  • Minimise the use of natural resources / Reduce carbon emissions
  • Respond effectively to climate change

  • Improve value for money by taking a whole life costs approach
  • Create and sustain competitive advantage through sustainability
  • Stimulate local economy to innovate and evolve

  • Improve working conditions and occupational health and safety
  • Follow corporate social responsibility guidelines
  • Promote local sourcing and fair trade
The case studies will demonstrate the environmental, economic and social benefits of sustainable procurement as well as how project teams overcome barriers which may impede the implementation of sustainable construction principles.

Currently, a number of groups in the region are planning to collaborate to set up a regional case studies network. Anyone in the scheme will also signpost readers to the network for easy access to other regional case studies.

If you would like to be a part of the network, or to put forward your project as a case study please contact us or the Sustainable Procurement Officer, Christos Vidalakis, on 0117 32 83016 or by email
