Low Carbon Futures: Money does grow on trees…
23 November at Watershed, Bristol
Chaired by RIBA Chief Executive, Harry Rich

Details have been released of an innovative event that will take place at Bristol’s Watershed Centre on 23 November, entitled ‘Low Carbon Futures: Money does grow on trees…’

The conference will look closely at the cutting-edge themes of the new green economy, the business case for using sustainable technologies and incentives and the balance between prosperity and economic growth.

The event’s organisers – the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) South West and The Green Register (TGR) – have been working hard to bring together an impressive line-up of speakers who will address a range of current topics.

Jon Watkins, Head of RIBA SW said:
“The aim of this event is to demonstrate that a new economic model can provide opportunities for forward thinking professionals to differentiate themselves from more conventional peers and secure new opportunities through increased awareness and knowledge.”

He adds:
Delegates who attend this event can expect to learn more about how we can work towards achieving the Government’s ambitious target of an 80% reduction in CO2 by 2050 and remain economically active.

Lucy Pedler, Director of The Green Register and practicing architect stated:
The architectural profession has taken a big hit with the economic downturn. This conference explores some of ways in which the new green economy can offer the construction industry plenty of opportunities for new work.”

There has been widespread coverage of Government schemes including the Feed-in Tariffs, the Renewable Heat Incentive and Pay As You Save, but this event will critically examine these schemes enabling delegates to make informed choices and distinguish between what measures reduce carbon emissions and what is greenwash.

Book before 29 October 2010 and you’ll receive an early-bird discount - for more information please contact RIBA South West on 0844 800 2767 or riba.southwest@inst.riba.org or the Green Register on 0117 377 3490 or mail@greenregister.org.uk

Frontline has been commissioned by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to evaluate the impact of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007 (CDM2007) on the construction industry in Great Britain.

CDM 2007 came into force on 6 April 2007. The key objectives of CDM 2007 are:

1.       Simplifying the Regulations to improve clarity – so making it easier for duty holders to know     what is expected of them
2.       Maximising their flexibility – to fit with the vast range of contractual arrangements in the industry
3.       Making their focus planning and management, rather than the plan and other paperwork – to emphasise active management and minimise bureaucracy
4.       Strengthening the requirements regarding co-ordination and co-operation, particularly between designers and contractors – to encourage more integration
5.       Simplifying the assessment of competence (both for organisations and individuals) – to help raise standards and reduce bureaucracy.

We will be evaluating whether those objectives have been met. As part of this evaluation, we are seeking the views of a range of people within the construction industry.

From the 28th September 2010 to 22nd October 2010, Frontline is hosting:

•         8 open forums in Glasgow, Newcastle, Manchester, Uttoxeter, Cardiff, Exeter, Surrey and Kent to get a broad range of views from large audiences

•         3 structured workshops in Glasgow, Manchester and London to get detailed views from a small number of duty holders

If you are interested in attending one of these events, please register online by following the link below or telephone Julia Chim or Zoe Awty at Frontline on 01698 464140.
