Sustainable Procurement
The implementation of sustainable procurement provides substantial opportunities to the construction industry and the wider community. Indeed, sustainable procurement can improve environmental performance and economic efficiency while addressing the social call for sustainable development. To take up these opportunities there is a clear requirement to motivate change towards sustainable attitudes and practices within the industry. For this reason, we are now putting together a series of case studies aiming to promote best practice in sustainable procurement and construction. The case studies include, but are not restricted to, projects which:
- Conserve and enhance natural environment and biodiversity
- Minimise the use of natural resources / Reduce carbon emissions
- Respond effectively to climate change
- Improve value for money by taking a whole life costs approach
- Create and sustain competitive advantage through sustainability
- Stimulate local economy to innovate and evolve
- Improve working conditions and occupational health and safety
- Follow corporate social responsibility guidelines
- Promote local sourcing and fair trade
The case studies will demonstrate the environmental, economic and social benefits of sustainable procurement as well as how project teams overcome barriers which may impede the implementation of sustainable construction principles.
